In 2018 there were 17 Coroners and a Chief Coroner in New Zealand.
Coroners are based in each region (including 5 in the Auckland/Northland region).
A National Initial Investigation office (NIIO) co-ordinates referrals and enquiries to the Coroners.
The coroners are supported by Case Managers and Legal Research Counsel.
Approximately 20% of all deaths are discussed with a Coroner.
Of the cases discussed, approximately 10-20% are formally accepted for Coronial jurisdiction.
Coroners are judicial officers (legally trained) rather than medical practitioners.
