The Police act as agents for the Coroner.

They visit the scene of death and make appropriate enquiries.

In Auckland, once a case has been accepted by the Coroner, notify the Police on 09 5712 800 - 24/7 contact number.

Forewarn the whanau that Police involvement is routine and does not necessarily indicate any criminal issue.
In general, minimise disturbance to the body and leave lines and tubes in situ.
Whanau should not touch the body without the Coroner's permission.

The Police will require a formal confirmation that the person is indeed dead.
The Police, not the medical or nursing staff, formally confirm the identity of the deceased.
