Criteria for referral to the Coroner: overview

OVERVIEW: criteria include:
  • any "unnatural" death as result of an accident or violence or suicide
  • maternal death during pregnancy or childbirth,
  • unexpected death attributable to a medical procedure or while affected by an anaesthetic.
  • the death of any person while in official custody
  • death where no death certificate can be provided

NB: "Death in custody" does
not include patients who are in institutional care via the EPOA provisions of the Protection of Personal & Property Rights Act
